Gib du mir Wein zu trinken,
so tu ich dir Bescheid,
tust du mir heimlich winke,
so ist mein Herz erfreut.

All Freud ist mir benommen,
vor lauter Traurigkeit;
ich hab mein Schatz gesehen
in einem weißen Kleid.

Ich hab ihn drin gesehen,
den ich nicht mehr sehn kann,
das tut mein Herze kränken,
das brennt wie Feuer und Flamm!

I love you and you alone,
I hope you’ll be mine,
you’ll be my very own.

Give me wine to drink,
so I’ll get the picture,
beckon me secretly,
so my heart will burst with joy.

All joy has been taken from me,
because of sadness;
I’ve seen my treasure
in a white dress.

I saw her in it,
I can’t look at her anymore,
it breaks my heart,
that formerly was so hot for her¹!
