"Dort raget ein Berg aus den Wolken her,
Ihn erreicht wohl mein eilender Schritt.
Doch [dort]1 ragen neue, und immer mehr -
Fort, da mich der Drang noch durchglüht."

Es treibt ihn vom schwebenden Rosenlicht
Aus dem ruhigen, heitern Azur. -
Und endlich - waren's die Berge nicht,
Es war seine Sehnsucht nur.

[Und allgemach rings wird es]2 öd und flach,
Und doch [kam]3 er nimmer zurück -
O Götter! gebt mir ein Hüttendach

Lotsaanvaarding

Daar torent een berg in de wolken omhoog,
Hem bereikt wel mijn haastende voet.
Maar nieuwe rijzen er steeds voor mijn oog,
Vooruit, want de drang geeft mij gloed.
 
Het trekt hem, het zwevende rood verschiet
In het rustige, held're azuur.
Maar eigenlijk waren 't de bergen niet,
Het was zijn gedreven natuur.
 
Doch nu wordt het overal kaal en vlak,
En toch kan hij nooit meer terug.
O goden, geef mij een simpel dak
In 't dal, en een vredig geluk.1
