In Veilchen und im Klee.

In Veilchen und im Klee:
So steh ich hier alleine;
Thut meinem Herzen weh.
 
  Ich hör ein Hirschlein rauschen,
Wohl rauschen durch den Wald;
Ich hör mein Lieb sich klagen:
Die Lieb verrauscht so bald.

Ich weiß nicht, wie mir wird;
Die Bächlein immer rauschen,

A-swooshing through the wheat;
I heard a maiden lamenting
That she had lost her love.

  Let it swoosh, Love, let it swoosh!
I pay no attention however it may go;
In violets and in clover,
I exchanged my love.

  You have wooed a maiden
In the violets and in the clover:
I stand here thus alone;
It makes my heart sore.

  I hear a little deer rushing,
A-rushing though the woods;
I hear my love lamenting:
Love rushes away so quickly.

  Let it rush, Love, let it rush!
I know not how I feel;
The brooklets rush always,
And not one of them gets lost.
