Und zu ihr sagt' ich: ach, Kalabresinchen!
Gieb mir ein Schlückchen, ein Schlückchen vom Wasser?
         Kalabresinchen,
         Niedliches Kindchen!

Und sie erwiederte artig und fein mir:
Nicht nur das Wasser -- mich selber, mich selber!

Quietly, very quietly she came from the brooklet,
         Little Calabrian,
         Adorable child!
         Little Calabrian,
         Calabrian!

And I said to her: ah, little Calabrian!
Would you give me a little sip, a little sip of water?
         Little Calabrian,
         Adorable child!
         Little Calabrian,
         Calabrian!

And, politely and prettily, she replied to me: 
Not only would I give you the water – but myself, myself!
         Little Calabrian,
         Adorable child!
         Little Calabrian,
         Calabrian!
