Dunkel rauscht des Stromes Welle
Language: German (Deutsch)
Dunkel rauscht des Stromes Welle
Wo kein Stern am Himmel steht,
Niemand sah noch seine Quelle,
Niemand weiß, wohin er geht.
Was am Ufer fröhlich grünet,
Reißt er mit in seinem Gang,
Und des Stromes Gottheit sühnet
Weder Opfer noch Gesang.
Und es wird die Nacht so schaurig,
Und der Schiffer sieht kein Land,
Und die Erde steht so traurig,
Wie aus Gottes Blick verbannt.
Aber an des Äthers Bogen
Plötzlich tritt ein Stern hervor,
Und es schweigt der Groll der Wogen,
Und es reißt der Wolkenflor.
Stern der Liebe, den wir sehen,
Tröstend ist dein Angesicht!
Wirst nur du am Himmel stehen,
Dann vergeht die Erde nicht.

Darkly surges the wave of the river
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Darkly surges the wave of the river
Where no star stands upon the heavens,
No one has yet seen its source,
No one knows whither it flows.
That which greens joyfully along its shore,
It seizes and bears along on its journey,
And the god of the river rewards
Neither sacrifice nor song.
And the night becomes so eerie,
And the boatsman sees no land,
And the earth stands so sadly,
As if banished from the sight of God.
But upon the arch of the aether
A star appears suddenly,
And the grimness of the waves falls silent,
And the gauze of the clouds tears open.
Star of love, which we see,
Your visage is comforting!
As long as you stand upon the heavens,
The earth shall not pass into nothingness.
