Klage
(Sung text for setting by F. Schubert)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT DUT ENG ENG FRE
Die Sonne steigt, die Sonne sinkt,
Des Mondes Wechselscheibe blinkt,
Des Aethers Blau durchwebt mit Glanz
Der Sterne goldner Reihentanz:

Doch es durchströmt der Sonne Licht,
Des Mondes lächelndes Gesicht,
Der Sterne Reigen, still und hehr,
Mit Hochgefühl dies Herz nicht mehr!

Die Wiese blüht, der Büsche Grün
Ertönt von Frühlingsmelodien,
Es wallt der Bach im Abendstral
Hinab ins hainumkränzte Thal:

Doch es erhebt der Haine Lied,
Die Au, die tausendfarbig blüht,
Der Erlenbach im Abendlicht
Wie vormals meine Seele nicht!

Lament
(Sung text translation for setting by F. Schubert)
 See original
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The sun rises, the sun sets,
The phases of the moon flash.
Interwoven with the ether’s blue luster,
Stars dance in a golden circle:

But neither the sun’s streaming light nor
The moon’s smiling face, nor
The stars’ dance, silent and majestic,
Can satisfy this heart any longer!

The meadow blooms, singing
Spring melodies to the green bushes,
The brook rushes at sunset
Down into the valley, encircled by woods:

But even though the grove raises its song, and
The meadow blooms in a thousand colors, and
The brook shines in the evening light,
They cannont lift my soul as before!
