Im Wald in grüner Runde,
Wo Wipfel über Wipfel schaut,
Auf stillem Wiesengrunde
Hab' ich die Hütte mir gebaut;
Sie steht, bewahrt vor Stürmen
An graubemooster Felsenwand,
Baumriesen sie umtürmen,
Die schützen sie mit Freundeshand;
Ins Fenster blüht die Rose,
Die Rebe grünt hinauf zum Dach,
Mit heimlichem Gekose
Rauscht nah vorbei der Wiesenbach.
Im Wald zur guten Stunde
Hab' ich die Stätte mir erschaut,
Und auf entlegnem Grunde
Die traute Hütte mir erbaut.
Vom Frühroth angelächelt,
Wie blickt ins Grün sie lebensfrisch!
Vom Abendhauch umfächelt,
Versinkt ins Thal sie träumerisch;
Natur, in deinem Bunde
Hab' ich die Hütte mir gebaut.

In the forest in the greenery,
Where treetops overlook other treetops,
On the quiet meadow
I built myself a cottage.
It stands, protected from storms,
Against a cliff grey with moss,
Giant trees tower above it,
They protect it like the hand of a friend;
A rose blooms its way into the window,
The green grapevine grows up toward the roof,
With a secret caressing
The brook in the meadow rushes past nearby.
In the forest at an auspicious moment
I chose the spot for myself,
And in this remote place
I built myself a snug cottage.
Smiled upon by the dawn,
How brightly full of life it gazes into the greenery!
When fanned by the evening breeze,
It sinks dreamily into the valley.
At noontime a son of the forest a tree
Holds a parasol over it.
At night the roundelays of the choir of fairies
Softly twine about it.
In the forest in the greenery,
Where treetops overlook other treetops,
Nature, in your fellowship,
I have built myself a cottage.
