In goldnen Abendschein getauchet
Wie feierlich die Wälder stehn!
In leise Stimmen der Vöglein hauchet
Des Abendwindes leises Wehn.
Was lispeln die Winde, die Vögelein?
Sie lispeln die Welt in Schlummer ein.
Ihr Wünsche, die ihr stets euch reget
Im Herzen sonder Rast und Ruh';
Du Sehnen, das die Brust beweget,
Wann ruhest du, wann schlummerst du?
Beim Lispeln der Winde, der Vögelein,
Ihr sehnenden Wünsche, wann schlaft ihr ein?
...
Ach, wenn nicht mehr in goldne Fernen
Mein Geist auf Traumgefieder eilt,
Nicht mehr an ewig fernen Sternen
Mit sehnendem Blick mein Auge weilt;
Dann lispeln die Winde, die Vögelein
Mit meinem Sehnen mein Leben ein.

Immersi nella dorata luce serale
come appaiono solenni i boschi!
Sulle delicate voci degli uccelli, leggera
soffia la brezza della sera.
Cosa sussurrano i venti e i piccoli uccelli?
Addormentano il mondo mormorando.
Voi desideri, sempre vi agitate
dentro il cuore senza riposo né sosta!
Tu nostalgia, che l'animo scuoti,
quando troverai riposo, quando ti placherai?
Al sussurrare dei venti, dei piccoli uccelli,
desideri ardenti, quando troverete la calma?
...
Ah, quando finalmente in dorate lontananze
non correrà più il mio spirito su piume di sogno,
e quando verso le eterne stelle lontane
non si poserà più il mio sguardo agognante,
allora i venti e i piccoli uccelli con il loro sussurro
parleranno al mio desiderio e alla mia vita.
