Die Luft durch dunkle Auen,
Und nur der Himmel lächelt
Aus tausend hellen Augen.
Es regt nur Eine Seele
Sich in des Meeres Brausen,
Und in den leisen Worten,
Die durch die Blätter rauschen.
So tönt in Welle Welle,
Wo Geister heimlich trauren;
So folgen Worte Worten,
Wo Geister Leben hauchen.
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraume
Ein, nur ein leiser Ton gezogen,
Für den, der heimlich lauschet.

Door 't donk're land gevlogen,
En slechts de hemel glimlacht
Met duizend lichte ogen.
Eén enk'le ziel slechts roert zich
In branding die 'k hoor bruisen
En in de zachte woorden
Die door de blaad'ren ruisen.
Zo klinkt in golven een golf door,
Waar geesten stil in klagen;
Zo volgen woorden woorden,
waar geesten leven in dragen.
Door alle tonen hoor je
In bonte aardedromen
Eén, slechts één zachte toon doorklinken,
Voor hem, voor hem1 die heim'lijk luistert.
