Und wie schön bist du heut'!
Möcht' an's Herz dich gleich drücken
Vor Jubel und Freud'.
Aber's geht doch nicht an,
Denn du bist mir zu weit,
Und mit all' meiner Freud'
Was fang' ich doch an?
Ach du lichtgrüne Welt,
Und wie strahlst du vor Lust!
Und ich möcht' mich gleich werfen
Dir vor Lieb' an die Brust;
Aber's geht doch nicht an,
Und das ist ja mein Leid,
Und mit all' meiner Freud',
Was fang' ich doch an?
Und da sah ich mein Lieb
Am Kastanienbaum stehn,
War so klar wie der Himmel,
Wie die Erde so schön!
Und wir küßten uns beid'
Und wir sangen vor Lust,
Und da hab' ich gewußt:
Wohin mit der Freud'!

in the linden tree's shade,

and we sang with delight,
till I knew what I missed:
