Vom Berg hinabgestiegen
Ist nun des Tages Rest;
Mein Kind liegt in der Wiegen,
Die Vögel all' im Nest;
Nur ein ganz klein Singvögelein
Ruft weit daher im Dämmerschein:
"Gut' Nacht! gut' Nacht!
Lieb' Kindlein, gute Nacht!"

Das Spielzeug ruht im Schreine,
Die Kleider auf der Bank,
Ein Mäuschen ganz alleine
Es raschelt noch im Schrank,
Und draußen steht der Abendstern
Und winkt dem Kind aus weiter Fern':
"Gut' Nacht! gut' Nacht!
Lieb' Kindlein, gute Nacht!"

Die Wiege geht im Gleise,
Die Uhr pickt hin und her,
Die Fliegen nur ganz leise
Sie summen noch daher. 
Ihr Fliegen, laßt mein Kind in Ruh'!
Was summt ihr ihm so heimlich zu?
"Gut' Nacht! gut' Nacht!
Lieb' Kindlein, gute Nacht!"

Der Vogel und die Sterne,
Die Fliegen rings umher,
Sie haben mein Kind schon gerne,
Die Engel noch viel mehr. 
Sie decken's mit den Flügeln zu
Und singen leise: "Schlaf in Ruh!
Gut' Nacht! gut' Nacht!
Lieb' Kindlein, gute Nacht!"

Pour le jour c'est maintenant l'heure de se reposer ;
Mon enfant est allongé dans son berceau,
Les petits oiseaux sont tous dans leur nid ;
Seul un petit chant d'oiseau
Appelle au loin dans le crépuscule
« Bonne nuit ! bonne nuit !
Cher petit enfant, bonne nuit ! »

Le jouet se repose dans le coffre,
Les habits sont sur le banc,
Une petite souris, seule,
Fait du bruit dans le placard,
Et l'étoile du soir se tient là-haut,
Et fait signe à l'enfant de loin :
« Bonne nuit ! bonne nuit !
Cher petit enfant, bonne nuit ! »

Le berceau se balance sur ses pieds à bascule,
L'horloge fait tic-tac
Seules les mouches doucement
Bourdonnent encore par ici.
Mouches, laissez mon enfant en paix !
Que lui bourdonnez-vous si secrètement ?
« Bonne nuit  !bonne nuit !
Cher petit enfant, bonne nuit ! »

L'oiseau et les étoiles,
Les mouches tout autour,
Aiment bien mon enfant,
Les anges encore plus.
Ils le protègent de leurs ailes
et chantent doucement : « Dors en paix !
