Es reden und träumen die Menschen so viel
Von besser'n und künftigen Tagen,
Nach einem glücklichen goldenen Ziel
Sieht man sie rennen und jagen.
Die Welt wird alt und wird wieder jung,
Doch der Mensch hofft immer Verbesserung!

Die Hoffnung führt ihn ins Leben ein,
Sie umflattert den fröhlichen Knaben,
Den Jüngling begeistert ihr Zauberschein,
Sie wird mit dem Greis nicht begraben,
Denn beschließt er im Grabe den müden Lauf,
Noch am Grabe pflanzt er - die Hoffnung auf.

Es ist kein leerer schmeichelnder Wahn,
Erzeugt im Gehirne des Thoren.
Im Herzen kündet es laut sich an,
Zu was besserm sind wir gebohren,
Und was die innere Stimme spricht,
Das täuscht die hoffende Seele nicht.

De mensen, zij praten en dromen vaak
Van beet're komende dagen;
Voor één gelukkige, schitt'rende zaak
Ziet men ze rennen en jagen.
De wereld wordt oud en wordt ook weer jong,
Maar de mens hoopt steeds op een voorwaartssprong.
 
Verwachting voert hem het leven in,
Zij omvlindert de vrolijke jongen,
De jongeman slurpt haar betovering,
De dood en het graf wordt ontsprongen.
Want besluit moe de grijsaard zijn levensloop,
Bij het graf nog plant hij de bloem der hoop.
 
Het is geen loze vlei'rige waan,
Geklets dat een dwaas ons laat horen.
Ons hart zelf doet het ons luid verstaan:
'Tot iets beters zijn wij geboren!'
En wat de stem van het hart voorziet,
Bedriegt de hopende ziel vast niet.
