Sind es Schmerzen, sind es Freuden,
Die durch meinen Busen ziehn?
Alle alten Wünsche scheiden,
Tausend neue Blumen blühn.

Durch die Dämmerung der Tränen
Seh' ich neue Sonnen stehn, -
Welches Schmachten! welches Sehnen!
Wag' ich's? soll ich näher gehn?

Ach, und fällt die Träne nieder,
Ist es dunkel um mich her;
Dennoch kömmt kein Wunsch mir wieder,
Erde ist von Hoffnung leer.

So schlage denn, sterbendes Herz,
So fließet denn, Tränen, hinab,
Ach, Lust ist nur tieferer Schmerz,
Leben ist dunkeles Grab, -

Ohne Verschulden
Soll ich's erdulden?
Wie ist's, daß mir im Traum
Alle Gedanken

Die mij door de borst heen  gaan?
Alle oude wensen wijken,
Nieuwe bloei breekt alom aan.
 
Door de schemering der tranen
Zie ik nieuwe zonnen staan, -
Wat een smachten, wat een hunk’ren!
Waag ik ‘t? Zal ik nader gaan?
 
Ach, en gaat de traan dan vallen,
Dan daalt donker om mij neer;
Wensen keren geen van alle,
D’ aarde is niet hoopvol meer.
 
Dus klop maar door, stervende hart,
Dus stroom maar af, tranen, stroom af.
Ach, lust is slechts diepere smart,
Leven een donker diep graf.
 
‘k Heb heel geen schuld en
Moet ik ‘t toch dulden?
