Lied vom Winde

Sausewind, Brausewind,
Dort und hier!
Deine Heimat sage mir!

"Kindlein, wir fahren
Seit vielen Jahren
Durch die weit weite Welt,
Und möchten's erfragen,
Die Antwort erjagen,
Bei den Bergen, den Meeren,
Bei des Himmels klingenden Heeren:
Die wissen es nie.
Bist du klüger als sie,
Magst du es sagen.
-- Fort, wohlauf!
Halt uns nicht auf!
Kommen andre nach, unsre Brüder,
Da frag wieder!"

Halt an! Gemach,
Eine kleine Frist!
Sagt, wo der Liebe Heimat ist,
Ihr Anfang, und Ende?

"Wer's nennen könnte!
Schelmisches Kind,
Lieb' ist wie Wind,
Rasch und lebendig,
Ruhet nie,
Ewig ist sie,
Aber nicht immer beständig.
-- Fort! Wohlauf!
Halt uns nicht auf!
Fort über Stoppeln und Wälder und Wiesen!
Wenn ich dein Schätzlein seh',
Will ich es grüßen.
Kindlein, ade!"

Canto del vento
(Sung text translation for setting by E. Kauffmann)
 See original
Language: Italian (Italiano)  after the German (Deutsch)
Vento che sibili, vento che soffi!
Di qua e di là!
Raccontami della tua patria!

"Mio piccolo ragazzo, io vado errando
da tanti, tantissimi anni
per tutto il vasto mondo,
e se volessi indagare,
e avere una risposta
dai mari e dai monti,
o dal cielo e dalle sue schiere squillanti
sarebbe impossibile ottenerla.
Se tu pensi di essere più sapiente
dammela tu la risposta.
E ora debbo andare,
non trattenermi!
Se altri venti arrivano, miei fratelli,
chiedilo a loro."

Arrestatevi! Piano,
per un istante solo!
Ditemi dov'è la patria dell'amore,
dove nasce, dove muore?

"Chi può saperlo!
Ragazzo scherzoso,
come il vento è l'amore,
vivace e rapido,
mai si riposa,
dura in eterno
ma senza costanza.
E ora debbo andare,
non trattenermi!
Via, attraverso campi, boschi e praterie.
Se incontrerò la tua bella
le darò il tuo saluto.
Addio ragazzo!"
