Sie trat mit zagem Schritte
Wohl zum Mariabild;
Es stand im lichten Scheine,
Es sah so muttermild
Herunter auf die Reine.
Sie sank zu seinen Füßen,
Sah auf mit Himmelsruh',
Bis ihre Augenlider
Im Tode fielen zu:
Ihr Schleier wallte nieder.

Une pâle vierge marchait en silence dans le jardin du couvent.
La lumière indécise de la lune l'éclairait,
À ses cils étaient suspendues
Les larmes d'un tendre amour.
« Ô je suis contente que mon fidèle amant soit mort !
J'ai à nouveau le droit de l'aimer :
Il sera un ange,
Et j'ai le droit d'aimer les anges. »
D'un pas hésitant elle se dirigea vers l'image de Marie ;
Elle baignait dans un jour lumineux,
Elle abaissa un regard tendrement maternel
Sur la pure jeune fille.
Celle-ci tomba à ses pieds, regarda vers le ciel avec calme,
Jusqu'à ce que ses paupières
Dans la mort se ferment :
Alors son voile flotta vers le sol.
