Brach sie Rosen zum Kranz,
Feurig prangte die Mischung
Rings im tauigen Glanz.
Ros' auf Ros' in das Körbchen sank,
Purpurrot und wie Silber blank.
Zwar den Grazien heilig,
Sang sie, blühet ihr dort;
Warum aber so eilig
Abgeblüht und verdorrt?

In ‘t struweel rond het bloembed
Brak zij rozen voor een kroon,
Vurig straalde het mengsel,
Rijk bedauwd, wonderschoon
Roos na roos kwam in ‘t korfje neer,
Purperrood en soms zilverteer.
‘Wel de Gratiën erend’,
Zong zij, ‘schoonheid ontplooid,
Maar waarom dan zo schielijk
Uitgebloeid en onttooid?
Die zojuist pas geopend staan,
Zullen gauw in de wind vergaan.

Jij roodstrepig klein knopje,
Bevend zie je je graf,
