ror i den unge, kraftfulde dag,
mætter sit mod i det vilde jag,
  sænker sig, hvor den lyster,
  ser mod de fremmede kyster!

Skal jeg da aldrig, aldrig nå
  over de høje fjelde? 
Skal denne mur mine tanker slå,
sådan med sne-is og rædsel stå
  stængende der til det sidste,
  blive min dødningekiste? 

Ud vil jeg! ud! -- O, så langt, langt, langt,
  over de høje fjelde! 
her er så knugende, tærende trangt,
og mit mod er så ungt og rankt,
  lad det få stigningen friste,
  -- ikke mod murkanten briste!

Engang, jeg véd, vil det række frem

   au-dessus de la haute montagne,
il plane dans le matin revigorant,
il se charge de courage, dans une chasse sauvage,
   il plonge où il veut, 
   il voit des côtes étrangères !

Ne pourrai-je jamais, jamais être proche
   de passer la haute montagne ?
Cette muraille frappera-t-elle mes pensées,
comme une terreur de neige et de glace,
   les verrouillant jusqu'à la fin,
   devenant mon cercueil ?

Je veux sortir ! Sortir ! -- Ô si loin, loin, loin,
   passer la haute montagne !
Ici, c'est si oppressant, étroit,
et mon cœur est si jeune et si droit,
   laissez-le tenter de s'élever,
