by Hafis (c1327 - 1390)
Translation by Hans Bethge (1876 - 1946)

Das Grab des Hafis
(Sung text for setting by K. Szymanowski)
 Matches base text
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Persian (Farsi)
Vor den Mauern von Schiras
liegt das schöne Mosella,
dort ist Hafis begraben.
An keinem Ort in Persien
flöten die Nachtigallen
so märchensüß wie da.
An keinem Ort in Persien
ersteht der holde Frühling
so blühend aus der Erde.
Seltsam! Die Blumen duften
auf dem Grabe von Hafis
ganz anders als sonst im Land.
Sie riechen festlich und freudig,
die Sinne so fein berauschend!
Das ist kein Duft nach Blumen,
das ist ein süßer Weinduft.
