Vor meinem Fenster
Singt ein Vogel.
Still höre ich zu; mein Herz vergeht,
Erinnerung klingt,
Abendrot winkt, Dämmerung schwingt.
Er singt,
was ich als Kind besaß
So rein errang, so voll bezwang,
So traut durchmaß, so ganz besaß
Und dann -- vergessen!

Before my window
Sings a bird.
I listen silently; my heart dissolves.
Memory sounds,
the evening glow beckons, twilight descends.
It sings
What I possessed as a child
So purely achieved, so fully understood,
So familiarly compassed, so completely possessed,
And then -- forgot!
