Was bedrängt dich doch so sehr?
Welch ein fremdes neues Leben!
Ich erkenne dich nicht mehr.
Weg ist Alles, was du liebtest,
Weg warum du dich betrübtest,
Weg dein Fleiß und deine Ruh' -
Ach wie kamst du nur dazu!

Fesselt dich die Jugendblüte,
Diese liebliche Gestalt,
Dieser Blick voll Treu' und Güte,
Mit unendlicher Gewalt?
Will ich rasch mich ihr entziehen,
Mich ermannen, ihr entfliehen,
Führet mich im Augenblick
Ach mein Weg zu ihr zurück.

Und an diesem Zauberfädchen,
Das sich nicht zerreißen läßt,
Hält das liebe lose Mädchen,
Mich so wider Willen fest;
Muß in ihrem Zauberkreise
Leben nun auf ihre Weise.
Die Verändrung ach wie groß!
Liebe! Liebe! laß mich los!

Non ti riconosco più.
Non c'è più nulla di ciò che amavi,
nulla di ciò che ti turbava,
nulla della tua ansia e della tua pace -
ah, come sei arrivato a tanto?

Ti incatena quel fiore di giovinezza,
quella dolce figurina,
quello sguardo pieno di fede e di bontà,
con catena infinita?
E se a lei voglio strapparmi,
farmi forza  per sfuggirle,
mi riporta in un istante,
ahimè, la mia strada ancora a lei.

E a questo magico filo
che non si può spezzare
mi tiene avvinto la cara, leggiadra fanciulla
anche contro il mio volere;
devo, nel suo cerchio magico,
vivere a modo suo.
Ah, come è grande il cambiamento!
Amore, amore, lasciami libero!
