Ich war erst sechszehn Sommer alt,
  Unschuldig und nichts weiter,
Und kannte nichts als unsern Wald,
  Als Blumen, Gras und Kräuter.

Da kam ein fremder Jüngling her;
  Ich hatt' ihn nicht verschrieben,
Und wußte nicht wo hin noch her;
  Der kam und sprach von Lieben.

 ...

Sein Auge, himmelblau und klar!
  Schien freundlich was zu flehen;
So blau und freundlich, als das war,
  Hab ich noch kein's gesehen.

Und sein Gesicht, wie Milch und Blut!
  Ich hab's nie so gesehen;
Auch, was er sagte, war sehr gut,
  Nur konnt' ichs nicht verstehen.

 ...

Ich sah' ihn einmahl freundlich an,
  Und fragte, was er meynte;
Da fiel der junge schöne Mann
  Mir um den Hals, und weinte.

Das hatte Niemand noch gethan;
  Doch war's mir nicht zuwieder,
Und meine beyden Augen sahn
  In meinen Busen nieder.

Ich sagt' ihm nicht ein einzig Wort,
  Als ob ichs übel nähme,
Kein einzigs, und - er flohe fort;
  Wenn er doch wieder käme!

Phidile
 (Sung text translation for setting by J. Kraus)
 See original
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
J'avais à peine seize ans,
J'étais innocente et rien de plus,
Et je ne connaissais rien à part nos bois,
Les fleurs, l'herbe et les plantes.

Alors un beau jeune homme arriva ;
Je ne lui avais pas ordonné de venir,
Et je ne savais pas d'où il venait ;
Il vint et parla d'amour.

 ...

Son œil, bleu ciel et clair !
Il semblait implorer amicalement,
Si bleu et si amical, comme celui-ci,
Je n'en ai toujours pas vu.

Et son visage, comme du lait et du sang !
Je n'en ai jamais vu de pareil ;
Même ce qu'il dit était si bon,
Seulement je ne pouvais le comprendre.

 ...

Une fois je l'ai regardé amicalement,
Et je lui ai demandé ce qu'il voulait dire ;
Alors le beau jeune homme tomba
Sur mon cou et pleura.

Personne ne l'avait encore fait ;
Mais je ne le trouvais pas désagréable
Et mes deux yeux
Se baissèrent sur mon sein.

Je ne lui dis pas un seul mot,
Comme si je le prenais mal,
Pas un seul mot -- il s'enfuit au loin ;
Si seulement il revenait à nouveau !
