possibly by Martin Luther (1483 - 1546) and possibly by Johann Heinrich Voss (1751 - 1826)

Gesundheit
(Sung text for setting by J. Kraus)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ITA
Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib und Gesang,
Der bleibt ein Narr sein Lebenlang.

Note: this is a saying ("Spruch") that first appeared in Wandsbecher Bote, 1775, No. 75, p. 300; and then in the Musenalmanach, 1777, of Johann Heinrich Voss, who may merely have claimed Luther said it. It also appears in a poem by Voss titled "An Luther". L. Waldmann's song Luther's Wahrspruch also refers to it.

Composition:

Set to music by Joseph Martin Kraus (1756 - 1792), "Gesundheit", VB 97 (1782) [ voice and piano ]

Text Authorship:

  • possibly by Martin Luther (1483 - 1546)
  • possibly by Johann Heinrich Voss (1751 - 1826)
