by Robert Burns (1759 - 1796)
Translation by (Johann) Philipp Kaufmann (1802 - 1846)

Was pocht mein Herz so sehr?
(Sung text for setting by R. Franz)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Scottish (Scots)
Was pocht mein Herz so sehr?
Was will im Aug' die Thrän'?
Was werd' ich immer todtenbleich,
Seh' ich dich von mir gehn?
Ach, bin ich fern von dir,
Wirst du nur lieber mir,
Wo du auch weilst, wohin du auch eilst,
Stets ist mein Herz bei dir.

 ...

Such' jed' Platzchen auf,
Wo ich einst war und du!
Da flüstern mir manch trautes Wort
Blumen und Quellen zu.
Hoffnung nur stillt mein Weh,
Da du so fern von mir;
Und wenn ich träum', daß ich dich seh',
Ist mir's ich sei bei dir.
