by Sándor Petőfi (1823 - 1849)
Translation by François Coppée (1842 - 1908)

A faluban utcahosszat
Language: Hungarian (Magyar)
A faluban utcahosszat
Muzsikáltatom magamat;
Tele palack a kezembe',
Táncolok, mint veszett fene.

Huzd rá, cigány, siralmasan,
Hogy magamat kisírhassam,
De majd ott az ablak alatt
Húzzatok valami vigat.

Ott lakik az én csillagom,
Az én bujdosó csillagom,
Aki tőlem elbujdosott,
S világát mással éli most.

Hej cigányok, itt az ablak:
Most a leges-legvigabbat!
Ne lássa az a csalfa lyány,
Hogy búsulok csalfaságán.

Chanson hongroise
(Sung text for setting by L. Delibes)
 Matches original text
Language: French (Français)  after the Hungarian (Magyar)
J'ai bu deux flacons de vin vieux.
Dans le village, au clair de lune,
Je danse en diable furieux.

Un cruel souci m'importune.
Gai, gai, Tsigane ! Un air joyeux,
Sur la fenêtre de ma brune.

La chère étoile ! je l'aimais !...
L'étoile file et l'amour vole.
Elle aime un autre désormais.

Gai, Tsigane ! Une chanson folle,
Afin qu'elle ignore à jamais
Que sa fausseté me désole.
