Es zog eine Hochzeit den Berg entlang,
Ich hörte die Vögel schlagen,
Da blitzten viel Reiter, das Waldhorn klang,
Das war ein lustiges Jagen!

Und eh' ich's gedacht, war alles verhallt,
Die Nacht bedecket die Runde,
Nur von den Bergen noch rauschet der Wald
Und mich schauert im Herzensgrunde.

Notes:
Stanza 1: In op. 75, Schumann adds another stanza after the first stanza:

Der Bräutigem küsste die blasse Braut,
die Mutter sprach leis', "Nicht klagen!"
Fort schmettert das Horn durch die Schluchten laut,
Es war ein lustiges Jagen!
Stanza 2, line 4, word 3: in op. 39, Schumann has "schauert's" instead of "schauert"

Le long de la montagne passait une noce,
J'entendais s'ébattre les oiseaux,
Soudain étincelèrent de nombreux cavaliers, le cor sonna,
C'était une joyeuse chasse !
Le marié embrassa la mariée,
La mère dit tout bas , « Ne te plains pas »
Le cor continuait de chanter dans les ravins,
C'était une joyeuse chasse !

Et avant de le réaliser, tout se perdit au loin,
La nuit recouvrit l'assemblée,
Seul venait de la montagne le murmure de la forêt,
Qui frissonnait en moi jusqu'au plus profond du cœur.
