Translation by Martin Luther (1483 - 1546)

Nisi Dominus ædificaverit domum
Language: Latin
Our translations:  FRE
1 [Canticum graduum Salomonis.] Nisi Dominus ædificaverit domum,
in vanum laboraverunt qui ædificant eam.
Nisi Dominus custodierit civitatem, frustra vigilat qui custodit eam.
2 Vanum est vobis ante lucem surgere: surgite postquam sederitis,
qui manducatis panem doloris. Cum dederit dilectis suis somnum,
3 ecce hæreditas Domini, filii; merces, fructus ventris.

(Sung text for setting by H. Schütz)
 Matches original text

Composition:

Set to music by Heinrich Schütz (1585 - 1672), "Wo der Herr nicht das Haus bauet", op. 12 no. 3, SWV. 400 (1650), from Symphoniae sacrae III - Geistliche Konzerte für Singstimmen und Instrumente, teils mehrchörig, no. 3
