Denke, mein Geliebter
(Sung text for setting by R. von Hornstein)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG FRE
Denke, denke, mein Geliebter,
Meiner alten Lieb und Treue,
Denke, wie aus freud'gem Herzen,
Sonder Harm und sonder Reue,
Frei das Wort ich dir gegeben,
Dich zu lieben, dir zu leben
Suche dir ein andres Lieb!

Ach! er kam, besah die Felder
Und das Haus, der Mutter Erbe,
Sprach und feilschte mit dem Vater,
Der befahl gestreng und herbe. --
Eitel war das Wort gesprochen,
Herz und Treue sind gebrochen --
Suche dir ein andres Lieb!

Und der Priester mit dem Munde
Sprach den Segen unverdrossen,
Unerhöret, einem Bunde,
Der im Himmel nicht geschlossen. --
Zieh von hinnen! zieh von hinnen!
Andres Glück dir zu gewinnen,
Suche dir ein andres Lieb!

Pense, pense, mon amour
(Sung text translation for setting by R. von Hornstein)
 See original
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Pense, pense, mon amour,
À mon ancien et fidèle amour ,
Pense comment le cœur joyeux,
Sans peine et sans regret,
Librement je t'ai promis
De t'aimer, de vivre avec toi -
Cherche-toi un autre amour !

Ah ! Il est venu, examina les champs
Et la maison, l'héritage de ma mère
Parla et marchanda avec mon père
Il ordonnait sévère et âpre -
La promesse était vaine,
Cœur et fidélité sont brisés -
Cherche-toi un autre amour.

Et le prêtre, infatigable, de sa bouche
Prononça la bénédiction,
Ignominieuse, de l'union
Que le ciel n'a pas conclue --
Pars d'ici ! pars d'ici !
Pour trouver un autre bonheur,
Cherche-toi un autre amour !
