Und wenn die Primel schneeweiß blickt
Am Bach, am Bach aus dem Wiesengrund,
Und wenn am Baum die Kirschblüth nickt 
Und die Vöglein pfeifen im Wald allstund:
Da flickt der Fischer das Netz in Ruh,
Denn der See liegt heiter im Sonnenglanz;
Da sucht das Mädel die rothen Schuh,
Und schnürt das Mieder sich eng zum Tanz,
Und denket still,
Ob der Liebste, der Liebste nicht kommen will.

Es klingt die Fiedel, es brummt der Baß,
Der Dorfschulz sitzet im Schank beim Wein,
Die Tänzer drehn sich ohn' Unterlaß 
An der Lind', an der Lind' im Abendschein.
Und geht's nach Haus' um Mitternacht,
Glühwürmchen trägt das Laternchen vor,
Da küsset der Bube sein Dirnel sacht,
Und sagt ihr leis' ein Wörtchen ins Ohr,
Und sie denken beid':
O du selige fröhliche Maienzeit.

I quan la prímula, blanca com la neu, esguarda
envers el rierol des de la prada,
quan les flors del cirerer capcinegen
i els ocellets xiulen al bosc tothora:
llavors tranquil•lament el pescador sargeix la xarxa,
car el llac resta serè a l’esclat del sol,
llavors la donzella cerca les sabates
i s’estreny el cosset per anar a la dansa,
i pensa en silenci
si l’estimat no vindrà.

Sonen els violins, bruelen les verres,
el batlle del poble beu vi a la taverna,
els dansaires giravolten sense parar
prop del til•ler, prop del til•ler, a la llum del capvespre.
I quan a mitjanit tornen a casa,
les lluernes mostren llurs petits fanals;
aleshores ell besa delicadament la seva noia
i li diu fluixet un petit mot a l’orella
i tots dos pensen:
oh tu feliç, joiós mes de maig!
