Fair daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attain'd his noon.

We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you, or anything.
We die,
As your hours ... and dry

Like to the summer's rain,
Or as the pearls of morning's dew,
Ne'er to be found again.

Schone narcissen, wij wenen als wij zien
dat jullie verdwijnen met zoveel spoed:
Vooralsnog is de vroeg rijzende zon
nog niet op het punt van hoogste gloed
Blijf, blijf,
totdat de voortsnellende dag
de gerend
is tot de vespertijd
en als we samen gebeden hebben gaan we
mee met jullie in verbondenheid.
Ons verblijf hier is maar kort
Net zo kort is ons voorjaar
Van onze groei tot ons verval
Als die van jullie daar
Wij sterven
en wij drogen uit
Zoals
een kort zomerbuitje vlug
Of als de parels van morgendauw
Die vind je niet meer terug!
