Am schönen Ostseeufer
Nun einsam sitz ich hier,
Die lieben Wellen flüstern,
Sie flüstern mir von dir,
Von deiner süßen Stimme,
Von deinem süßern Kuß
Und aus der Ferne bringen
Sie mir der Liebe Gruß.
Nah', aber drüben, wandelt's
Wie Stimmen und Gesang,
Und süßer Schauer wallet
Den stillen Strand entlang.

Set to music by Gustav Jenner (1865 - 1920), "Am schönen Ostseeufer", op. 2, Heft 2 no. 5, published 1891 [ voice and piano ], Berlin: N. Simrock

At the beautiful shore of the Baltic
I now sit here in solitude,
The dear waves whisper,
They whisper to me of you.
They whisper of your sweet voice,
Of your even sweeter kiss
And from the distance they bring
Love's greeting to me.
Close, but something is moving
Like voices and song,
And a sweet frisson passes
Along the silent shore.
