Purpurne Wolken! und möge droben

In Licht und Luft zerrinnen mir Lieb und Leid'!
Doch, wie verscheucht von törichter Bitte, flieht
Der Zauber; dunkel wird's und einsam
 ... 

Komm du nun, sanfter Schlummer! zu viel begehrt
Das Herz; doch endlich Jugend! verglühst du ja,
Du ruhelose, träumerische!
Friedlich und heiter ist dann das Alter.

Un printemps s’épanouit dans le ciel du soir ;
d’innombrables roses éclosent, et le monde doré
luit paisiblement ; oh, emmenez-moi,
nuages amarantes, et que là-haut se dissolvent

en moi amour et douleur dans la lumière de l’éther ! —
Mais, comme effarouché par cette folle prière, 
l’enchantement disparaît ; l’obscurité s’installe, 
et je me retrouve plus seul que jamais sous le ciel.—

Viens donc, doux sommeil ! Mon coeur en demande trop ;
tu finiras par t’apaiser, 
fiévreuse et rêveuse jeunesse !
Car avec l’âge viennent paix et équanimité.
