Hellt matt der Dämmrung Schleyer,
Wie Leichenfackel-Schein.

Entschweifen bang dem Schooß
Der Alpenwelt, und wanken
Um ferner Gräber Moos.
Tief ist die Ruh' der Grüfte;
Der Morgensonne Licht,
Das Wehn der Frühlingslüfte,
Weckt ihre Schlumm'rer nicht.

O Freunde! deren holde
Gestalten, mildumstralt
Von blassem Abendgolde,
Mir die Erinnrung malt:
Fünf Kränze von Platanen
Bringt, hier am Felsaltar,
Die Sehnsucht euren Manen
Zum Todtenopfer dar.

Endeuillées de brouillard ;
Dans le murmure anxieux des roseaux
Le ruisseau poursuit lentement son cours ;
Le feu lointain d'un berger
Près d'un bois de sapins gris
Jette une clarté blafarde sur le voile du crépuscule,
Pareille à la lueur d'un cierge mortuaire.

Les pensées de deuil
Errent anxieuses, issues
Du monde des lutins et chancellent
Sur la mousse de lointaines tombes.
Le repos des tombeaux est profond ;
La lumière du soleil le matin,
Le souffle du vent au printemps
Ne réveille pas leurs dormeurs.

Ô amis ! Vos bienheureuses
Silhouettes, doucement nimbées
De l'or pâle du soir
Se manifestent dans mon souvenir.
Immolez ici, sur l'autel de roche,
Comme oblation,
Cinq couronnes de platane
