Schlafe, Liebchen, weil's auf Erden
Nun so still und seltsam wird!
Droben gehn die goldnen Herden,
Für uns alle wacht der Hirt.
...
Schlingend sich an Baum und Zweigen
In Dein stilles Kämmerlein,
Wie auf goldnen Leitern, steigen
Diese Töne aus und ein.
Und ein wunderschöner Knabe
Schifft hoch über Tal und Kluft,
Rührt mit seinem goldnen Stabe
Säuselnd in der blauen Luft.
Und in wunderbaren Weisen
Singt er ein uraltes Lied,
Das in linden Zauberkreisen
Hinter seinem Schifflein zieht.

Dors, mon cœur, car sur terre
Tout devient maintenant étrange et calme !
Là-haut des hardes d'or défilent,
Le berger veille sur nous tous.
...
Se faufilant parmi arbres et rameaux
Jusqu'à ta petite chambre,
Comme sur une échelle d'or,
Mes notes montent et descendent.
Et un ravissant garçon
Navigue haut par-dessus vallées et ravins,
Et de sa baguette d'or il crée
Un frémissement dans l'air tiède.
Et d'une façon merveilleuse
Il chante un très vieil air
Qui, en fragiles cercles magiques
S'échappe derrière son esquif.
