Der Abendnebel schwillt am Gestad' empor,
Wo durch verdorrte Felsengräser
Sterbender Lüfte Gesäusel wandelt.

Nicht schwermuthsvoller [bebte]1 des Herbstes Wehn
Durchs todte Gras am sinkenden Rasenmal,
Wo meines Jugendlieblings Asche
Unter [der trauernden Weide]2 schlummert.

Ihm Thränen opfern werd' ich beim Blätterfall,
Ihm, wenn das Mailaub wieder den Hain umrauscht,
Bis mir, vom schönern Stern, die Erde
Freundlich im Reigen der Welten schimmert.

Neppure un barlume rosato rischiara il giorno che va verso il riposo!
La nebbia della sera si alza sulla riva
dove, tra l’arida erba delle rupi,
brezze morenti vagano bisbigliando.

Non più malinconico di queste fremeva il soffio dell’autunno,
attraverso l’erba morta, sul pendio del prato
dove le ceneri del mio amore giovanile
riposano sotto i salici piangenti.

A lui offrirò le mie lacrime al cadere delle foglie,
a lui quando le fronde di maggio ritorneranno a stormire nel boschetto,
finché di fronte a me, da una più bella stella, la terra
scintillerà benevola nella girandola dei mondi.
