Ankunft in Venedig
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): CAT ENG FRE
Du lautlos dunkler Kanal,
Verlassene Bucht,
Uralter Häuser graue Flucht,
Gotische Fenster und maurisch verziertes Portal!
Von tiefem Traum besiegt,
Vom Tode eingewiegt
Schläft hier die Zeit
Und alles Leben scheint so weit, so weit!
Hier will ich ganz allein
Durch alte Gassen gehn,
Bei Fackelschein
An Gondeltreppen stehn,
In blinde Fenster sehn
Bang-glücklich wie ein Kind im Dunkeln sein.

Arrival in Venice
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
You soundless, dark canal,
Deserted bay,
The grey rows of ancient houses,
Gothic windows and a doorway ornamented in the Moorish manner!
Conquered by a deep dream,
Lulled by death,
Time sleeps here
And all life seems so far away, so far away!
Here would I all alone
Walk through the old streets,
To stand in the light of torches
At the steps leading down to the gondolas,
To gaze into blind windows,
To be blissfully anxious like a child in the dark.
