Mr. Springtime is now giving a concert In the hall of the green forest, To this event he has invited Young and old, very politely. Demoiselle Lark is singing The very first song, And as she hopes, silently trusting, With the same good fortune as of old. A never-before-heard solo is then Performed by Mr. Cuckoo, But out of modesty he does not dare To emerge from the bushes and reeds. After a short pause, the little blackcap, As well as ever he can, Shall divert all the listeners With loud trills. Thereupon follows a jocular Quodlibet Entitled: Love and May, Mr. Lapwing, Woodpecker and Goldfinch As well as Mr. Finch performing. Madame Thrush also takes part, Mrs. Magpie and Mr. Starling, And of many other unnamed sires and dames A whole flock. After this another concert follows -- [This one] by Miss Nightingale, The accompaniment thereof Is by Mr. Echo. And if you do not like or wish To lend your ears to the singing At the end there shall still follow A trio of frog, cicada and cricket. It must also be mentioned that the hall Has just recently been redecorated, And richly garnished and trellised With flowers of all kinds. Come therefore, whoever is a true friend Of song and sound and jest, The price of admission is merely: A free, joyful heart.
