Es ging an einem Morgen Ein Ritter über die Au. Er dacht in bangen Sorgen An die allerschönste Frau. »Mein wertes Ringlein golden! Verkünde du mir frei, Du Pfand von meiner Holden, Wie steht es mit ihrer Treu?« Wie er's betrachten wollte, Vom Finger es ihm sprang, Das Ringlein hüpft' und rollte Den Wiesenrain entlang. Er will mit schnellen Händen Es haschen auf der Au, Doch goldne Blumen ihn blenden Und Gräser, betropft von Tau. Ein Falk es gleich erlauschte, Der auf der Linde saß, Vom Wipfel er niederrauschte, Er holt' es aus dem Gras. Mit mächtigem Gefieder Er in die Luft sich schwang. Da wollten seine Brüder Ihm rauben den goldnen Fang. Doch keiner gewann's von allen, Das Ringlein fiel aus der Höh. Der Ritter sah es fallen In einen tiefen See. Die Fischlein hüpften munter, Zu haschen den goldnen Tand; Das Ringlein sank hinunter, Bis es den Blicken schwand. »O Ringlein! auf den Triften, Da äffen dich Gras und Blum; O Ringlein! in den Lüften, Da tragen die Vögel dich um. O Ringlein in Wassers Grunde, Da haschen die Fische dich frei. Mein Ringlein! ist das die Kunde, Die Kunde von Liebchens Treu?«

Un matin passait Sur la prairie un chevalier. Il pensait avec inquiétude À la plus belle des femmes. « Mon cher petit anneau d'or ! Dis-moi sincèrement, Toi, gage de ma belle, Qu'en est-il de sa fidélité ? » Comme il voulut le contempler, Il s'échappa de son doigt, El le petit anneau bondit et roula Le long du bord de la prairie. De ses mains rapide , il voulut L'attraper sur la prairie, Mais il fut ébloui par des fleurs d'or Et des herbes gouttant de rosée. Soudain un faucon l'aperçut, Depuis son perchoir sur un tilleul ; Depuis la cime il fonça Et l'enleva de l'herbe. De ses ailes puissantes Il s'éleva dans les airs Où ses frères Voulurent lui voler sa prise dorée. Mais aucun d'entre eux ne réussit, L'anneau tomba de là-haut. Le chevalier le vit tomber Dans un profond lac. Les petits poissons bondissaient Pour attraper le petit bijou d'or ; Le petit anneau coula vers le fond Jusqu'à disparaître de la vue. « Ô petit anneau ! Sur la pâture L'herbe et les fleurs te fourvoient; Ô petit anneau, dans les airs Les oiseaux te tourmentent. Ô petit anneau, au fond de l'eau Les poissons t'attrapent librement. Mon petit anneau ! Est-ce là un message, Le message de la fidélité de ma bien-aimée ? »
