Der Mensch auch lag in Geistesnacht, Erstarrt von dunklem Wahn; Der Heiland kam, und - es ward Licht! Und heller Tag bricht an. Und seiner Lehre heil'ger Strahl Weckt Leben nah' und fern; Und alle Herzen pochen Dank, Und preisen Gott den Herrn. Doch warnend spricht der Heil'ge Mund: »Nicht frommt der Glaub' allein, Nur die Erfüllung eurer Pflicht Kann Leben ihm verleih'n.« - Drum gib ein gläubiges Gemüth! Und gib auch uns, o Gott, Ein liebend Herz, das fromm und treu Stets folget dem Geboth! Verleih' uns Kraft und Muth, daß wir Nicht nur die Wege seh'n, Die der Erlöser ging, daß wir Auch streben nachzugeh'n. Nog was de schepping niet gevormd - zo luidt het oud bericht -, toen God de Heer sprak: ‘Er zij licht!’ Hij sprak en het werd licht. En ’t leven kwam en ging zijn gang, men bracht er orde in en overal klonk lofgezang en iedereen had zin. De mens lag ook in duisternis, verward door eigenwaan. De Heiland kwam en het werd licht: een held’re dag brak aan. De heil’ge straal van zijn verhaal wekt leven overal; en alle harten brengen dank en lof de Heer van ’t al. Maar als vermaan spreekt Godes mond: ‘Blijft niet bij geloof alleen, slechts de vervulling van uw plicht brengt ‘t leven verder heen.’ Dus schenk ons, Heer, een vroom gemoed en daarbij, lieve God, een hart dat liefdevol en trouw steeds volgt uw groot gebod. Geef ons de kracht, schenk ons de moed, dat wij de wegen zien, die de Verlosser zelf eens ging ter navolging nadien. Laat zo uw evangelieboek ons hemelvoorschrift zijn en voer ons onder uw gezag naar waar we zalig zijn.
