Und hell der Mond am Himmel wacht;
Was mag der Bleiche hüten?
Nicht Geld, nicht Gold, nicht irdisch Gut,
Er hält in seiner treuen Hut 
Des Herzens heil'gen Frieden.

Er scheint auf Berge, scheint auf's Thal,
Scheint auf die Wälder allzumal,
Scheint auf die stillen Seeen,
Er scheint tief in das Herz hinein
Und leis stellt sich das Heimweh ein 
Mit seinen süßen Wehen.

The day was loud, quiet is the night,
And brightly the moon keeps watch in the heavens;
What might the pale one be guarding?
Not money, not gold, not earthly goods;
In his faithful keeping he holds
The holy peace of the heart.

He shines upon mountains, shines upon valleys,
Shines upon all the forests,
Shines upon the quiet lakes,
He shines deeply into my heart,
And quietly homesickness appears
With its sweet pain.
