Når løvet falder træt fra skogens kroner,
henover jorden stum og kold og grå,
når solen synker lavt og farver, toner
dør sagte hen, da vil jeg forgå.
For højt jeg elsker jordens skjønne rige,
at skilles fra det i en maigrøn dag!

For tungt det blev farvel i vår at sige
midt i violers duft og lærkers slag.
Nej, når naturene dør, så vil jeg falme
med den så stilt og fromt som skog og eng!
Oktoberstormen spille skal min salme
og visne blade rede mig min seng.

Quand la feuille lasse tombe des couronnes de la forêt
sur la terre muette et froide et grise,
quand le soleil descend bas et que les couleurs et les tons
meurent doucement, alors je disparaîtrai.
Car j'aime trop le beau royaume de la terre
pour en être séparé un jour de mai verdissant !

Car il est cruel de dire adieu au printemps,
parmi le parfum des violettes et le chant des alouettes.
Non, quand mourra la nature, je me fanerai
avec elle, aussi silencieux et doucement que forêts et champs !
La tempête d'octobre sera mon cantique
et les feuilles mortes feront mon lit.
