Hafisens Scheiden
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Am Kuß von einem süßen Munde
In Traum gewiegt bei Becherklang,
So denk' ich mir, Hafis, die Stunde,
Da zu dir der Todesengel drang.
Du grüßtest ihn mit heiterm Lächeln,
Du trankst noch einen Becher Wein,
Dann unter duft'gem Rosenfächeln
Schliefst du sanft bei Bülbüls Flöten ein.

The death of Hafez
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
By the kiss from a sweet pair of lips
Rocked into dreams during the clinking of goblets,
Thus I imagine, Hafez, the hour
In which the angel of death came to you.
You greeted him with a gay smile,
You drank another goblet of wine yet,
Then under the scented fanning of roses
You fell gently asleep to the fluting of the nightingale.
