Ich hab' in den Klüften des Berges gehaust
Gar manche schaurige Nacht,
Und wann in den Föhren der Sturm gesaust,
Recht wild in den Sturm gelacht.
Da, wo die Spur sich des Menschen verlor,
Ward's erst mir im Busen leicht;
Ich bin geklommen auf Gipfel empor,
Die sonst nur der Adler erreicht.
Das Land, vom luftigen Horst geschaut,
Lag unten, von Wolken verdeckt;
Da schallte mein Lied gar grimmig und laut, -
Das Lied - hat schier mich erschreckt.
Und nieder trieb mich die grausige Lust
Am Strom der Wildnis entlang;
Ihn überschrie aus bewegter Brust
Mein seltsam brausender Sang.
Der Strom vertobt in ein friedliches Thal,
Dort liegt ein einsames Haus -
Ein Rosengarten - ein Gartensaal -
Es schaut wohl jemand heraus.
Und wie ich schweifend vorübergewallt
Am Hag, wo die Rosen sind,
Sind alle die schaurigen Lieder verhallt,
Ich ward so ein sanftes Kind!

J'ai habité les gouffres de la montagne,
Même par bien des nuits horribles,
Et quand la tempête mugissait dans les pins,
J'ai sauvagement ri face à la tempête.
Là où se perd la trace des hommes,
Seulement là, j'avais le cœur léger ;
J'ai gravi les sommets
Que seul l'aigle atteint.
Le pays, vu des halliers aériens
S'étendait en bas, couvert par les nuages ;
Là résonnait mon chant, furieux et fort,
Ce chant m'a presque effrayé.
Et une envie épouvantable m'a poussé
À descendre le torrent de la vie sauvage ;
D'une poitrine agitée j'ai crié plus fort que lui
Mon chant étrange et mugissant.
Le torrent faisait rage dans une vallée paisible,
Il y a là une maison isolée,
Un jardin de roses, un salon donnant sur le jardin,
Quelqu'un regardait à l'extérieur.
Et comme je me dirigeais sans un mot
Vers la clôture, là où sont les roses,
Tous les chants horribles se sont évanouis,
J'étais devenu un enfant si doux !
