Nun um mich her die Schatten steigen,
Stellst du dich ein, willkommnes Schweigen,
Du, aller tiefsten Sehnsucht wert.
Sehr hab ich unter Lärm und Last
Des Tags nach dir, du scheuer Gast,
Wie einem lieben Freund begehrt.

Das wirre Leben ist verklungen,
In Höhen ging und Niederungen
Längst jeder laute Schall zur Ruh.
Urstimmen, die der Tag verschlang,
Erklingen, mystischer Gesang -
Ja, süßes Schweigen, rede du.

Was über deinen stillen Mund
Aus einem rätseltiefen Grund
Mit leisem Murmeln quillt herauf,
Ich halte zitternd meine Schalen
Und fang die feinen Silberstrahlen
Verborgner Quellen selig auf.

Les ombres montent autour de moi,
Installe-toi, silence bienvenu,
Toi qui conviens aux plus profonds désirs,
Sous le poids et le bruit du jour,
Je t'ai beaucoup désiré, timide invité,
Comme un ami cher.

Le tohu-bohu de la vie s 'est évanoui,
Sur les hauteurs et dans les fonds
Toute clameur s'est endormie depuis longtemps.
Des voix primitives, englouties par le jour,
Résonnent, chant mystique –
Oui, doux silence, tu parles.

Quelque chose sur ta bouche silencieuse,
Venu de profondeurs énigmatiques
Jaillit avec un léger murmure,
Je tiens en tremblant ma coupe
Et recueille avec bonheur les légers rayons d'argent
D'une source cachée.
