Der Kanker

Der Kanker spinnt an seiner Kankerwebe
ein luftiges und gastfreundliches Haus
und kehrt von einer zu der andern Rebe,
bis zur Vollendung seines Gartenbaus.
Er wartet dann, dass ihm der Zufall gebe,
was summend kommt, und macht ihm den Garaus.
Umgibt es noch mit einem Wollgewebe
und wirft es schließlich aus dem Netz hinaus.
Sobald die Nacht mit ihrem Silberstreifen
im Vollmond lieblich durch die Reben zieht,
hat sich der Kanker in dem Laub verborgen,
weil er nicht gern den Vollmond glitzern sieht,
und wartet, wartet auf den nächsten Morgen,
um mit dem Tageslicht sein Garn zu weifen.

The Daddy‑Long‑Legs

The Daddy-Long-Legs works on spinning his web --
An airy and hospitable house --
And sweeps from one vine to the other
Until his garden-structure is complete.
He waits then, in order that fate may give him
That which comes buzzing, and finishes it off.
Furthermore, he encloses it in a woolly web
And finally tosses it out of the net.
As soon as night with its silvery streaks
Passes through the vines beautifully in the light of the full moon,
The Daddy-Long-Legs has hidden himself in the foliage,
Because he does not like to see the full moon glittering,
And waits, waits for the next morning
So that with the daylight he may reel out his threads.
