Die Frauen zünden, wenn sie nicht mehr hoffen, die Kronenleuchter, und das Licht ist schwächer, sie schweben schweigend vor den Seidenstoffen und Spritzenränden durch die Prunkgemächer. Die Frauen wüßten, wenn es spät geworden, zu lieben wie sie nicht zu lieben wußten, als es für sie noch nicht zu spät geworden, noch nicht zu spät und sie zu lieben wußten. Die Frauen singen, wenn ihr Lied verschollen, mit halber Stimme die verschollnen Lieder, und vor den Wünschen, die da weilen wollen, und vor dem Traum erstehn die Träume wieder.

Der Kanker spinnt an seiner Kankerwebe ein luftiges und gastfreundliches Haus und kehrt von einer zu der andern Rebe, bis zur Vollendung seines Gartenbaus. Er wartet dann, dass ihm der Zufall gebe, was summend kommt, und macht ihm den Garaus. Umgibt es noch mit einem Wollgewebe und wirft es schließlich aus dem Netz hinaus. Sobald die Nacht mit ihrem Silberstreifen im Vollmond lieblich durch die Reben zieht, hat sich der Kanker in dem Laub verborgen, weil er nicht gern den Vollmond glitzern sieht, und wartet, wartet auf den nächsten Morgen, um mit dem Tageslicht sein Garn zu weifen.

Wie ein Traum sind die Jahre dahin meines lachenden Knabenalters, wie der Flaum und das Ultramarin eines flatternden Tagesfalters. Und ich war doch ein munteres Kind, voller lebhaften Phantasien, welche klar ihren Wunsch in den Wind einer schwankenden Zukunft schrieen. Wie der Schaum, der im Sande zerrann, ist der Leichtsinn leider zerronnen, nun ich kaum mich beschuldigen kann, daß ich jemals zu lachen begonnen!

Ich hab einmal in einem stillen Weiler, der sich hoch oben zog den Berg entlang, ein Lied gehört, das eine sanfte Mutter dem sanften Schlummer ihres Kindes sang. Wo sind die Berge meiner Jugend heute? Was singt die Mutter heute ihrem Glück? Ich weiß es nicht! Doch kehrt zu Zeiten das ferne Lied mir in den Sinn zurück!
