Schall aus der Ferne
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Mir ist, als fände
sich durch die Wände
zu mir ein Schall;
er schwillt, verteilt sich
und übereilt sich
von Fall zu Fall.

Was mag er bringen,
und was bedingen,
was kann es sein?
Es fällt mir eben
(er schwillt im Schweben)
doch gar nichts ein!

Er dringt schon wieder
zu mir hernieder
von weitem her --
mir ist beim Schwalle
von diesem Schalle
das Herz so schwer!

A sound from far away
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
It seems to me as if
Through the walls
A sound finds its way to me;
It swells, disperses
And hurries
From instance to instance.

What might it be bringing,
And what [might it be] requiring,
What can it be?
At the moment
(The sound swells in wafting past)
Nothing at all occurs to me!

Once more it penetrates
Down toward me
From far away --
At the swelling
Of this sound
My heart is so heavy!
