Der Morgen steigt und glüht und steigt,
Und frohe Herzen beben;
Ein Tag, und überschauert schweigt
Das [trunken reiche]¹ Leben.

Und zwischen Auf- und Niedergang
Blutwellenheißes Schlagen,
Ein Hoffen tausend Leben lang,
Ein Schmerz und ein Entsagen.

Und ists nur einen Sonnenblitz,
Daß uns ein Glück bereitet,
Nur einen kurzen Sattelsitz,
Daß Freude uns begleitet:

Freiweg durchs Leben! Sprung und Sporn!
Und Schwert und Schlacht und Scherben,
Und Glück und Tück und Kranz und Dorn,
Und rauscht der Tod durchs reife Korn,
Ein Lächeln noch im Sterben.

Et les cœurs heureux tremblent ;
Un seul jour et, terrorisée, se tait
La vie riche et enivrante

Et entre le lever et le coucher du soleil,
Un battement de sang chaud,
Un espoir qui dure un millier de vies,
Une douleur et un renoncement.

Et si seulement un éclair de soleil
Qui nous donne une fortune,
Si un court instant sur la selle
La joie nous accompagne :

Franchement à travers la vie ! À cheval et éperonnons !
Et épée et combat et casse,
Et joie et mal et couronne et épines,
Et si la mort murmure à travers les blés mûrs,
Sourions encore en mourant.
