La filleta de l’esperit de les aigües dansa damunt el gel a la llum de la lluna, ella canta i riu desimboltament per davant de la casa del pescador. “Sóc la donzella `Peus de jonc', i haig de custodiar els meus peixos, els meus peixos que estan en una arca on passen gana i fred; la meva arca és de cristall de Bohèmia, i a cada moment els puc comptar. Oi, pescador babau? Oi, vell talòs, no et pots ficar al cap que som a l’hivern? No em vinguis amb les teves xarxes! Prou te les esquinçaré! Però la teva noieta és certament pietosa i bona i el seu enamorat un ardit caçador. Per això, penjaré per a ella, com garlanda de noces, una corona de joncs davant la casa i un feixuc esturió d’argent que prové del rei Artur, l’obra mestra d’un ferrer nan, que porta sort a qui el posseeix, cada any es deixa escatar i això representa cinc-centes monedes.
