by Viktor Rydberg (1828 - 1895)
Translation by Hilja Onerva Madetoja (1882 - 1972), as L. Onerva

Poet
Language: Norwegian (Bokmål)
Jordisk smärta sig ändlig vet.
Hell dig, milda förgänglighet,
du, som gav oss ett mål, en hamn,
du, som lärde oss dödens namn!

O, hur stjärnan från evig led
trånfull ser till ditt rike ned,
som hon vore av längtan tärd
till de växlande formers värld.

Jordisk smärta är ändlig blott.
Hell förgängelsens milda lott!
Under eviga stjärnor dig
prisar en dödlig på nattlig stig.

Hautalaulu
Language: Finnish (Suomi)  after the Norwegian (Bokmål)
Mainen murhe on haihtuvaa.
Siunattu lempeä Tuonen maa
rientomme mitta ja määrän pää
valkama yöstä mi häämöttää!

Tähti, kiertäjä ikuinen
puolees katsovi kaihoten
niinkuin pyrkis se taivaaltaan
kauneusvirtahan vaihtuvaan.

Päättyy tuska ja onnettuus.
Siunattu lempeä katoovaisuus!
Yöstä tummalta polultaan
sua kiittävät lapset maan.
