Da sitz' ich ohne Bogen
Und starre in den Sand.
Was that ich dir, Ulysses?
Daß du sie mir entwandt
Die Waffe, die [dem Feinde]1
Des Todes Bothe war;
Die auf der wüsten Insel
Mir Unterhalt gebar.
Es rauschen Vögelschwärme
Mir [übers greise]2 Haupt;
Ich greife nach dem Bogen -
Umsonst - er ist geraubt.
Aus dichtem Busche raschelt
Der braune Hirsch hervor:
Ich strecke leere Arme
Zur Nemesis empor.
Du schlauer König scheue
Der Göttin Rächerblick!
Erbarme dich - und stelle
Den Bogen mir zurück.

Sec aquí sense el meu arc
i esguardo la sorra.
Què t’he fet Ulisses
perquè me l’hagis robat?
L’arma que fou l’emissari
de la mort dels troians
i que, en aquesta illa deserta,
em donà sustentació.
Vols d’ocells brunzinen
damunt el meu vell cap;
debades vull prendre el meu arc,
m’ha estat robat!
D’espessos matolls remoreja
el cérvol bru:
alço els meus braços
buits vers Nèmesi.
Tu, rei astut, redubta l’esguard
venjatiu de la deessa!
Tingues pietat
i retorna’m l’arc.
